Mt. Pearl -- CAPS 2 BLADES 0

As One Door Closes …

The St. John’s Caps eliminated the Mount Pearl Blades in the first round of playoff hockey at the Glacier on Tuesday night with a 2-0 win. The Caps won the series with two straight victories closing the door on the Blades advance to the finals.

Both teams seemed a little nervous in the opening period. It was a much different looking Caps team than the one that gave the Blades a 12-0 beating just two days before. The Blades looked a little different too. Perhaps it was the return of Head Coach Rod Noseworthy that pumped the team up for game two.  Whatever the reason, the Blades put on a great show in front of the home town fans but fell just a little short of advancing to game three.

At the end of three periods the Blades graciously conceded the loss and headed to the dressing room. Parents, players, and coaches didn’t take long to head out. The coaching staff never laid blame or complained. They let their team deal with the loss and  wished them all a happy holiday weekend.

Before clearing out of the dressing room the team continued their tradition of recognizing the Blades players of the game. Lenny French’s aggressive checking earned him the Blades Offensive Player of the Game. He came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and lead the team in forechecking. James Brennan was acknowledged as the Blades Defensive Player of the Game for his flawless blueline support and movement of the puck.

“This holiday weekend is just what the team needs to rest up for the All Newfoundland .” said Head Coach Noseworthy. “With the regular season and playoffs behind us, this may have worked out in our favor. Our players can rest up and focus on next week’s tournament. We can carry the momentum from the final round of the regular season into the tournament. They have beaten every team in the Tri-Com league this year. So, they have a legitimate shot at the provincial crown.”

So, as one door closes, another one opens. Expect an exciting finish to the Blades hockey season.  Tournament play begins on Monday. Mount Pearl faces St. John’s in game one at 1:00pm. Catch the excitement at the Kelligrews Arena. See you there.

GO BLADES GO!!!
